I use it to paint my eyebrows, itäs perfect for that, actually.

I know there are no essential oils for ambergris. And the faux one isn't called essential oil either. :) Essential oil and infused oils are quite different, with infused oil it would propbably be much oilier and wouldn't dry out at quickly. . As long as the real purpose is unknown, I think it would be impossible to state which kind to really use. :)Isishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09380497568603304818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4215278741526021154.post-57464580714071900412014-04-17T19:24:34.541-07:002014-04-17T19:24:34.541-07:00My best guess is it's supposed to be a tint fo...My best guess is it's supposed to be a tint for cosmetics and hair powder, and just becomes a paste due to the large amount of liquid perfumes added -- it dries fast as you say (umber has a drying effect and was historically used in varnishes sometimes for the specific purpose of its drying power -- the pigment itself would be strained out as much as possible. Lead has the same chemical effect. However, since the other pigments in this recipe suggest a color is being aimed at, I don't think the drying power is it's purpose here.) It's true he lists most of the pigments of this type in their own chapter, but that final miscellaneous chapter also had a recipe for washing detergent that could have been theoretically used elsewhere. Maybe it is a multipurpose pigment and so didn't qualify for the hair powder -- he also has recipe for tinted pomades and soaps, so might be added to those things.

Also -- rose pink pigment in that era would normally mean a chalk stained with red liquid pigment (brazilwood, alkanet, whatever), to give an idea what color they want.

Final suggestion: I think everything but the bergamot and lemon oil is supposed to be an infused oil instead of an essential oil (for example, there is no such thing as ambergris essential oil.) Cinnamon essential oil is famously irritating to the skin, so I'd say he doubtless meant the infusion of cinnamon and oil which is a little more skin-friendly and was historically used in cosmetics. Cinnamon essential oil is typically only used in cosmetics that are deliberately meant to be irritating to the skin (example, lip-plumper which works by causing inflammation to swell the lips.) As it is now it works just fine for eyebrows, though I would dearly love to learn for sure what it was meant for. :)Isishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09380497568603304818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4215278741526021154.post-42038682071284091202013-06-22T09:21:16.543-07:002013-06-22T09:21:16.543-07:00Isis, I really like how you experiment and check t...Isis, I really like how you experiment and check things out. When I clicked on your link from my blog to check out what you are up to, I said to myself, wow is she making yummy chocolate? LOL! Once I figured out you were making a cosmetic, my first thought was that it would be too brown even for me. I do like the idea of the eyebrow cream. I use a company called Benefit's compact which is a wax based brown tinted cream and a brown powder that you apply to color and shape the eyebrow. Using yours would limit the process to one application. Fabulous! My dear, please keep on experimenting. I am learning so much from you. Cheers. I have a small amount and as I don't plan to prance around any 18th century party's with my breast exposed, I may as well use it to tint my eyebrows. :)Isishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09380497568603304818noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4215278741526021154.post-4860787409188967332013-06-07T10:04:33.339-07:002013-06-07T10:04:33.339-07:00I love the effect on the eyebrows!
